Wow, I haven’t seen this photo for over 10 years.
In 8th grade English, Mrs. Vance showed this photo and had us write a story about it.  As I recall, most kids pointed out how weird it was that the fireman was looking at pumpkins while the blaze was still burning strong.
I believe my story was about one of the pumpkins setting the fire and then blending back in with the crowd.
Way to bring back a memory from the deep recesses of my brain.

This isn’t for the zine, but I had to post it. It’s absolutely phenomenal. It’s by photographer Joel Sternfeld, taken in the late 70’s. I saw it at the Art Institue in Chicago, a brilliant exhibit called MIND AT PLAY.
The story behind this photo must be cool. What started the fire? Why are there pumpkins smashed to bits everywhere?
